JAPAN MARKET ENTRY

Sell in Japan — without a Japanese entity.

Fujiya Trade becomes your sales team and your marketing team inside Japan. We build demand across three channels — advertising, physical retail and online marketplaces — and we take care of importing, regulatory compliance, stock, delivery and customer service on the Japanese side.

Fujiya Trade supports overseas brands entering the Japanese market

YOUR SALES TEAM IN JAPAN

No Japanese company.
No import licence. No local team.

When a good product fails in Japan, the reason is almost never the product. It is the missing Japanese infrastructure: you cannot be the importer, you cannot read the labelling rules, you have nowhere to hold stock, and you have nobody selling in Japanese. Fujiya Trade — a Tokyo trading company founded in 1948 — takes on all of it. You ship the goods. We create the sales.

  • No Japanese subsidiary needed — we act as importer of record and domestic seller
  • Marketplace setup and day-to-day operation: Amazon.co.jp, Rakuten Ichiba and Yahoo! Shopping
  • Japanese advertising in one place: Amazon Ads, Rakuten RPP, Google, Meta, TikTok, LINE, Yahoo!
  • Wholesale into 1,000+ Japanese retail stores, plus trade shows and crowdfunding PR
  • Regulatory checks, Japanese labelling, customs, warehousing, delivery and returns handled locally

WHAT WE DO

Four functions that add up to "selling in Japan".

Online, advertising and physical retail — plus the importing and logistics that make them possible. One counterparty instead of five.

01

Online | Marketplaces and e-commerce

Opening and running your stores on Amazon.co.jp, Rakuten Ichiba and Yahoo! Shopping: Japanese product pages, photography, inventory integration, review strategy and pricing.

02

Advertising | Japanese paid media

In-marketplace advertising such as Amazon Ads and Rakuten RPP, plus Google, Meta (Instagram / Facebook), TikTok, LINE and Yahoo! Japan. We run only the spend that works backwards from ROAS.

03

Retail | Wholesale, shelves and trade shows

Buyer proposals into our network of 1,000+ stores, in-store fixtures and POP materials, and full-service exhibiting at Japan's major trade shows. Reaching the customers online cannot.

04

Behind the scenes | Import, compliance, logistics, support

Customs clearance as importer, ingredient and labelling checks under our cosmetics licence, storage and shipping through our own "raklogi" network, and Japanese-language customer service and returns.

FAQ

Questions overseas companies actually ask us

Straight answers to the questions we get from manufacturers and brands considering Japan.

Can a foreign company sell products in Japan without establishing a local entity?

Yes. Fujiya Trade acts as the importer of record and the domestic seller in Japan, so you do not need a Japanese subsidiary, branch office or local warehouse. We are the legal counterparty for transactions, invoicing, tax and customer service inside Japan.

What is required to import cosmetics into Japan?

To distribute cosmetics in Japan, a domestic company holding a cosmetics manufacturing/marketing-authorization licence must take legal responsibility as the marketing authorization holder. Fujiya Trade holds that licence, so we can carry out PMD Act ingredient checks, produce Japanese labelling and clear customs under our own name. You do not need to obtain a Japanese licence yourself.

Can an overseas brand sell on Amazon.co.jp or Rakuten?

A foreign entity can sometimes register directly, but the practical barriers are significant: a Japanese bank account, Japanese-language customer service, a domestic returns address and the disclosures required by the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions. With Fujiya Trade as the Japanese seller of record, store setup, product pages, inventory integration, advertising and customer support are all handled in Japanese.

How much does it cost to enter the Japanese market?

It depends on the model. Under a wholesale buyout there is no cost to you — it is built into our purchase price. Under a sales agency agreement we combine a monthly fee with a performance fee on sales, quoted per project. One-off trade show support starts at ¥250,000 excluding tax. The initial market assessment is free.

How long does it take before we start selling?

It depends on the category and on licensing, but 2–3 months from the first conversation to the first shipment is a realistic benchmark. Regulated categories such as cosmetics and food take longer because of ingredient review and Japanese labelling, so we recommend planning for 4–6 months.

Can you get our product into physical stores in Japan, not just online?

Yes. Fujiya Trade has a network of 1,000+ retail stores and around 300 sellers in Japan, and we make buyer proposals to variety stores, drugstores and lifestyle retailers. We also handle full-service exhibiting at Japanese trade shows, in-store fixtures and POP materials, and crowdfunding campaigns that create buzz before the shelf conversation.

Do you also run advertising in Japan?

Yes. We operate our own commerce-focused advertising agency. We run in-marketplace advertising such as Amazon Ads and Rakuten RPP alongside Google Ads, Meta (Instagram and Facebook), TikTok, LINE and Yahoo! Japan. The person running it is a practitioner who grew beauty commerce to ¥12 billion in annual sales, so everything is designed backwards from ROAS.

Which product categories do you handle?

Cosmetics and beauty, food and beverage, alcoholic drinks, household and lifestyle goods, gifts and small appliances. Cosmetics is a particular strength because we hold the Japanese marketing-authorization licence and operate our own K-beauty B2B platform, COSTRE. We do not handle pharmaceuticals or medical devices.

What languages can we work in?

Japanese, English, Korean and Chinese (Traditional and Simplified). Contracts are drawn up bilingually — Japanese/English, Japanese/Korean or Japanese/Chinese.

Do we have to give you exclusive distribution rights in Japan?

No. Both the sales agency and wholesale buyout models start without exclusivity. Many partners move to a long-term exclusive distributorship only after the Japanese numbers prove themselves. We recommend starting small, looking at the data, and deciding afterwards.

What makes the Japanese market different from other countries?

Two things: the strictness of quality and labelling standards, and the fact that Japanese buyers judge your supply capability before they judge your product. Reliable lead times, a defect-handling process, Japanese-language documentation and a clear returns flow. Overseas brands that lack these four rarely make it onto a shelf, no matter how good the product is. Fujiya Trade supplies exactly that layer on the Japanese side.

Where should we start?

Send us your product information through the contact form — category, intended price point and your track record at home. We will run a free initial assessment of competitors, price points, channel fit and regulatory feasibility in Japan, and tell you honestly whether entry makes sense. If it does not, we will tell you why.

HIGHLIGHT

A trading company that actually knows how to sell

Plenty of companies offer to help you enter Japan. Most of them handle only the importing, or only the advertising. Customs is cleared, and still the goods do not move out of the warehouse — this is where overseas makers get stuck most often. Fujiya Trade is a trading company founded in 1948 that runs its own e-commerce, advertising agency, logistics network, wholesale channel and trade show operation in house. On top of that, our representative Ishii is a practitioner who grew beauty commerce to ¥12 billion in annual sales. The difference is that we do not stop at getting your goods into Japan. We stay until they sell in Japan.

HIGHLIGHT
